The recently released "avast Free Antivirus 8" is a great free virus scanner with a lot of protective features. Avast Free Antivirus 8 is a complete virus scanner for your computer, which guards the data access as well as the entire mail traffic. As it's really easy to use, it's also suitable for beginners. The real time protection includes a few modules that prevents infections: monitoring of emails, protection for sharing tools, messenger scanner and alerts service. For each module you can set the level of protection, so the sensitivity of the scanner. Of course you can also manually check folders and files for viruses via the context menu. Even more interesting, however, should be the automatic boot scan, which you should use at least once a week. Version 8 of the free antivirus package also includes an updated layout and of course also runs under Windows 8. In addition, the sandbox and the protection of the browser have been improved. The virus database is constantly being updated via streaming and the tool also checks your PC for other old software and offers relevant updates. You can get rid of annoying browser toolbars and add-ons via the integrated browser cleanup tool. All the other updates you can find on the forum of the developer. There's also avast WebRep, a browser plug-in for Firefox, Chrome and IE, that displays the security status of the web page you've just visited with a little colourful bar next to the Google search results. The web protection examines all processes by default. Verdict: For a virus scanner avast Free Antivirus offers an exceptionally good rate for spy- and adware recognition and comes with some neat extra features. Note: Before the installation you need to delete older versions of avast Free Antivirus from your system. To keep the virus database up to date, you'll be asked to register for free when the program starts up for the first time. If you don't register, you get a license that's valid for 30 days.
